Vanuatu’s first batch of 24,000 doses of AstraZeneca Covid- 19 vaccines arrived safely in Port Vila late Wednesday night.

Air Vanuatu flew the vaccines from Brisbane to Port Vila International Airport, where Prime Minister Hon. Bob Weibur Loughman was on hand to officially mark the start of Vanuatu’s Covid-19 vaccination rollout.
 
The handover ceremony included traditional dancers from Futuna who helped celebrate this milestone in true Vanuatu fashion.
 
At the ceremony, PM Loughman underscored the importance of the vaccination rollout by volunteering to be the first person in Vanuatu to receive a dose. He said that mass vaccination of Vanuatu’s population against Covid-19 was crucial for protecting Vanuatu: “We must not wait until it's too late”.
 
The first batch of AstraZeneca 24,000 vaccines will be given to the elderly, health workers, border control staff, public transport drivers, and people with underlying conditions, according to the Ministry of Health.
 
Vanuatu will receive 24,000 AstraZeneca vaccine doses every two months as part of the worldwide Covid-19 Vaccines Global Access (COVAX) initiative, plus another 20,000 doses of another WHO-approved Covid-19 vaccine, Sinopharm.
 
The vaccination rollout will be undertaken province by province, commencing in early June in Shefa Province. Sanma Province will be the next to receive the vaccines, with the other four provinces to follow over the rest of 2021.
 
Public education programs are underway to build community confidence in the vaccination program. This is supported by Safe Business Operations training for all businesses in Vanuatu, which will ensure that Covid-safe business practices are being implemented throughout the country.
 
According to Vanuatu Tourism Office (VTO)’s CEO, Ms. Adela Issachar Aru, the commencement of the vaccination program will give Vanuatu's people increased confidence in re-connecting with our main international tourist markets, Australia, New Zealand and New Caledonia, and vice versa.
 
“The vaccination program will help assure international visitors and ni-Vanuatu alike that Vanuatu will help keep you safe from Covid”, says Ms. Issachar Aru.
“Tourism will always be an important to Vanuatu. It's the only sector capable of delivering a rapid economic recovery when we are eventually able to safely reopen our borders. Our tourism businesses support the livelihoods of thousands of Vanuatu’s people, and 93% of our 2,500+ tourism businesses are small, family-run, and indigenous-owned, the majority of them located in rural areas.”
 
"But more importantly, welcoming visitors is a strong part of our kastom and culture".
 
“VTO therefore congratulates the Government and the people of Vanuatu for reaching this crucial next step on the road to our economic recovery”.
 
“Vanuatu’s Covid-free status and the National Deployment and Vaccination Plan for Covid-19 Vaccines shows just how capable Vanuatu is in managing Covid-19. The public health and border control measures that our Government has put in place have kept Vanuatu safe—and they will help keep our visitors safe too, when we are finally able to welcome them back”, says the VTO CEO.
 
The Vanuatu Government continues to emphasise the importance of practising enhanced hygiene and social distancing measures to help ensure that Vanuatu remains Covid-free.
